Background
Inclusive representation in literature and other forms of media is of vital importance in India and globally. While local and global cultures have historically been diverse in the way of traditions, language, food, and thought patterns, this diversity has never thoroughly been represented in popular literature and media. Inclusive representation can foster a sense of belonging, empathy, and understanding. By accurately portraying reality, inclusive representation in media can provide knowledge and an understanding of social processes such as marginalization, prejudice, biases, and stereotypes.
While these social processes are far from unknown to individuals from virtually every walk of life, the lack of open conversations about these issues is widening the gap among diverse individuals. Diversity should bring people from different cultures together, and representation in literature and media can do just that. By allowing readers to explore and understand diverse perspectives, inclusive and representative literature can empower individuals to accept their diverse identity instead of shunning that part of themselves. Literature particularly lacks representation of women and marginalized communities causing these demographics to be overlooked or undermined in society. As literature is a strong tool that can facilitate social change and evolution, the need for better representation of these marginalized populations is vital to the inclusive development of our society and culture. At PaperBound, we believe that inclusive representation is essential to storytelling in its various forms. In this vein, we aim to motivate young students and readers to explore diversity through inclusive representation.
